In our Westernised society many people spend all their lives chasing success and chasing time.  Constantly trying to keep up with the furious pace of life and the expectations placed on us by society and by other important figures in our lives – bosses, parents, partners and peers.  With the state of the economy as it is people have been working longer and harder, just to keep their jobs.  The pressures of mortgages, loan repayments, tax bills, etc. are ever present.

Coaching to prevent stress

Many organisations are now turning to executive coaches to help themselves and their employees, as their habits of working and thinking in a way that create stress are becoming ingrained.  You could use coaching to prevent stress for yourself or your staff...  Consider for a moment, whether you or your staff are those people who get home from work, only to spend all of your free time fretting about things which need doing, things which may go wrong, or possible confrontations you may encounter?  Or do you find that all you are capable of doing in the evening, is slumping onto the sofa in front of the television?  Or maybe you don’t even have time to do this, as you take work home with you, or stay at the office until bedtime…

It goes without saying that this in unhealthy, both mentally and physically!  If you, or your staff spend all your time worrying, fretting and feeling stressed, you are training your minds to worry, fret and stress!  Stress is one of the major contributing factors in the incidence of poor health.  If you become mentally or physically ill you or your staff aren’t going to be capable of performing all the work which is so important to you!  It’s time to stop, and put yourself first for once.  And your staff need encouraging to do the same.  With high expectations on them in the workplace, they may find it difficult to accept that they should stress less, that's why getting external coaching to prevent stress is a good idea.

An executive coach can help these individuals to work out the key thought patterns that are causing them stress, and change those.  To see their ways or working which could be made more efficient and therefore saving them time.  She can also help them to focus on the key priorities, rather than being a 'busy fool'.  And she can help them to understand the importance of taking time to look after themselves.

It starts with simple things...

Like giving yourself permission to do relaxing things in the evening.  Doing things with your free time to recharge your batteries, and scheduling them into you plans for each next week.  Small changes like these will enable you and your teams to be more resourceful at work the following day and prevents you from burning out.  It's important to remember that staying at work late isn't the message of a good employee.  The best farmers are the ones who give their fields a season off growing crops, and take the time to put the nutrients back into the soil.  They have the best crops on a regular basis.  People who work themselves to the bone become less and less effective...
