Using a solution focused approach can make short work of raising low self esteem

self_esteem.jpgLife Coaching is all about aiming for positives.  And we coaches also believe that the answers for what we each need to improve whatever we need to improve is within us.  Sometimes we just have to look for it really hard.  So try following this exercise:

  1. Pick one symptom of your low self esteem (For a list visit this self esteem article).
  2. Rate how much you think that is affecting you out of 10.  I.e. 10 = it totally affects me, and 1 = it barely affects me at all.
  3. Think of a time when you have done something despite this symptom...  Think hard, we promise there will be something.
  4. Think about what it was that allowed you to do that?  Where did that strength come from?
  5. Think of one thing that you could do in the next couple of days, which you might not normally have done because of this symptom.  It can be a tiny change or a big gesture, it's up to you!
  6. Do it!
  7. Notice how much better you feel about this symptom.  Re-rate it out of 10.
  8. Pick another thing you can do in the next couple of days.
  9. Repeat until your symptom rating has reduced to a level you are happier about.
