Solving Stress in the Workplace
As Many as 79% of the British Workforce Experience Workplace Stress
According to 2 independent surveys, as many as 79% of the British workforce experience work related stress. It seems to be a normal, accepted part of every day society now! The majority of people are used to operating with their nervous system fired up and pumping cortisol into their bodies. Which of course reeks havoc both physically and emotionally.
Good news is it needn’t be that way. There are some really simple things that you could do to soothe your nervous system, reduce stress and return your body to a more optimal state. I’ve listed the more obvious stuff below. Don’t worry if these things aren’t accessible – keep reading for more good news!
- Take breaks. Even 5 minutes away from your task will leave you feeling better than if you just keep persevering.
- Get outside for a brief walk in nature. The exposure to the natural world starts to regulate your system.
- Humm or gargle. Sounds odd, but using the throat in this way activates the Vagus Nerve, which is responsible for returning us to a state of rest and clearer thinking.
- Engage in mindful movement, such as yoga, Tai Chi or dance.
- Stop for lunch and when you eat, take time to chew your food.
- Talk to someone impartial about how you are feeling. The impartiality is important. Speaking to someone who is also in the thick of the same stress is more likely to reinforce your body’s response to the work situation.
- Journal your feelings about work. The good and the bad. The brain is wired to seek out negatives – the journaling will create a more balanced view.
- Eat whole foods and cut out processed foods and caffeine. The latter create more of a stress response in the body, which isn’t helping.
