How to Shift Your Money Mindset (By Changing What You’re Looking For)

Jul 28, 2025 | Business Coaching, Executive Coaching, Personal Development

We all have money stories.  Beliefs about how money works, what we deserve, and what’s possible for us. Some of these stories empower us. But many? They quietly sabotage our success.

If you’ve ever found yourself saying things like:

  • “I’m not good with money”

  • “Money doesn’t come easily to me”

  • “People like me don’t get rich”

…then you’re likely running a subconscious pattern that’s shaping your reality more than you realise.

So how do you shift your money mindset – really?
Not just by repeating affirmations, but by changing the way your brain is wired to look at money and opportunity?

Let’s explore.

💡 Why mindset alone doesn’t work

You can think all the positive thoughts in the world, but if your nervous system is wired for survival, and your subconscious beliefs say “wealth isn’t safe” or “you’ll be judged if you succeed,” those beliefs will win every time.  Or if you have low feelings of worthiness, your subconscious beliefs may be saying things like “people like me don’t make a lot of money”, the same applies.

That’s because your brain is designed to confirm what it already believes. It filters what you see, what you notice, and what you feel about your options.

This is where the Reticular Activating System (RAS) comes in.

🧠 The Reticular Activating System: Your Brain’s Search Filter

The RAS is like your brain’s personal Google. It decides what you pay attention to based on the beliefs and intentions you hold.—Even the unconscious ones.

If your RAS is tuned to:

“Money is stressful. I never have enough.”
Then that’s what you’ll keep seeing.
But if you tune it to:
“Opportunities are everywhere. I’m capable of creating more.”
You’ll begin to notice doors you didn’t even know existed.

This is how we begin to change subconscious beliefs about money, not by forcing ourselves to “think positive,” but by working with the brain and gently retraining the way we perceive the world.

🔄 How to Start Shifting Your Money Mindset

Here are a few simple but powerful ways to begin:

1. Notice what you notice

Start by observing your reactions to money:

  • When someone talks about wealth, what do you feel?

  • Do you feel envy, contraction, doubt, or possibility?

This awareness helps you trace back the subconscious belief that’s been running the show.

2. Interrupt the pattern

When you hear yourself say “I can’t afford that” or “That’s not for people like me,” pause.
Ask: “Is that really true? Or just something I’ve believed for a long time?”

Interrupting these habitual thoughts is a powerful first step to rewiring them.

3. Tune your RAS to something new

Each morning, ask yourself:

“What’s one way money could flow to me today?”
This small shift trains your brain to scan for possibilities, not problems.

4. Regulate your nervous system

If money makes your body tense, no mindset work will stick.
Try breathing exercises, tapping (EFT), or even a short walk to reset your system before making decisions or setting intentions.

🧭 What’s possible when you change your internal filters?

Once you start shifting your subconscious money beliefs, everything changes.

You:

  • Spot opportunities you used to scroll past

  • Feel less anxious and more empowered around money

  • Make decisions based on possibility, not fear

  • Attract situations, people, and ideas that align with abundance

It’s not magic. It’s how the brain works when it’s no longer clouded by old conditioning.

🧠 People Also Ask:

Q: What is a money mindset?
A: Your money mindset is the collection of beliefs, thoughts, and feelings you hold about money. It influences how you earn, spend, save, and think about wealth.

Q: How do I know if I have a negative money mindset?
A: If you feel shame, fear, or anxiety around money—or if you find yourself stuck in patterns like undercharging, overspending, or avoiding finances—it’s a sign your mindset may be working against you.

Q: Can I really change my subconscious beliefs about money?
A: Yes. Through awareness, nervous system work, and repetition, you can rewire the patterns that no longer serve you and replace them with more empowering beliefs.

Q: What’s the fastest way to shift my money mindset?
A: There’s no “quick fix,” but combining nervous system regulation with intention-setting and consistent re-patterning tends to work faster than mindset work alone.
